  • Driver drowsiness is a significant cause of road accidents, leading to injuries and fatalities worldwide. To address this issue, this project proposes a comprehensive driver drowsiness detection system using Raspberry Pi, Proteus simulation, alcohol level detection, seat belt detection, buzzer alert, and accident detection alert messaging.
  • The system incorporates a Raspberry Pi, a single-board computer, as the main control unit. It utilizes a camera module to monitor the driver’s face and detect signs of drowsiness such as eye closure, head nodding, and yawning. An image processing algorithm analyzes the captured frames in real-time to determine the driver’s alertness level.
  • In addition to drowsiness detection, the system incorporates alcohol level detection using a sensor. The alcohol sensor measures the concentration of alcohol in the driver’s breath, providing an indication of impairment. If the alcohol level exceeds a predefined threshold, an alert is triggered.
  • Furthermore, the system includes a seat belt detection mechanism. It employs sensors to monitor the status of the driver’s seat belt. If the seat belt is not fastened, the system detects it and issues a warning to the driver.
  • To ensure immediate attention and response, the system is equipped with a buzzer alert. When drowsiness or non-compliance with seat belt usage is detected, the buzzer generates a loud sound, alerting the driver to take corrective action.
  • In the event of an accident, the system incorporates an accident detection module. It uses accelerometers or collision sensors to detect sudden impact or collision. Upon detection, the system sends an alert message to a predefined emergency contact, providing them with the driver’s location details and the severity of the accident.
  • The proposed driver drowsiness detection system offers a comprehensive approach to improve road safety by addressing multiple risk factors. The use of Raspberry Pi and Proteus simulation provides a cost-effective and efficient platform for implementing and testing the system. By integrating alcohol level detection, seat belt monitoring, buzzer alerts, and accident detection, the system enhances driver safety and helps prevent accidents caused by drowsiness or impairment.
