RFID and Fingerprint Based Smart Attendance System



Abstract

This project presents a Smart Attendance System leveraging a Raspberry Pi, RFID card scanning, and fingerprint authentication to automate and secure attendance tracking in educational settings. Upon system startup, users are prompted to enter the lecture name, which is then used to label attendance records. Each student must first scan their unique RFID card; if recognized, the system next requests a fingerprint scan for biometric verification. Successful authentication triggers an audible buzzer and logs the attendance entry—including student name, date/time, and lecture name—into an Excel sheet for easy record keeping and administrative review.

Beyond attendance capture, the system features a comprehensive database management interface that allows administrators to add, delete, or update student profiles, including registration of new RFID cards and fingerprint templates. This dual-layer authentication significantly reduces fraudulent entries (e.g., card-sharing) compared to RFID-only systems, while providing an intuitive interface for both users and administrators. The design emphasizes accuracy, user feedback via LCD prompts and buzzer alerts, and flexible data management through combined Excel and database storage.
